The European Union blasted Beijing on Wednesday after a Chinese court sentenced Canadian citizen Michael Spavor to 11 years in prison, stressing that Spavor has "a right to a fair trial."
The trial against the Canadian was held "behind closed doors," and he was not allowed to pick his own defense team, a statement issued by the spokesperson for the European External Action Service read.
Spavor's "right to a fair trial and due process, including the right to a public hearing, as guaranteed under international human rights law and China's Criminal Procedure Law, has not been upheld," the statement concluded.
