The European Union and the United Kingdom could reveal a joint preliminary plan on ways to overcome most obstacles concerning the Northern Ireland Protocol, the Republic of Ireland's national broadcaster RTE reported on Monday, citing unnamed diplomats.

The new framework could be announced today after a video meeting between European Commission Vice President Maros Sefcovic and UK Foreign Secretary James Cleverly that will follow a weekend of intense work on a joint declaration on the Northern Ireland Protocol from the Brexit withdrawal agreement.

Although a formal agreement is not close to being reached, the document that could be unveiled later in the day could show how much progress the two sides have made on the most critical issues such as border checks, according to the report.
