Fox News announced the company has filed a motion to dismiss the lawsuit by Dominion Voting Systems, one of the suppliers of election technology in November's presidential election, on the basis of the media’s "free-speech right to inform the public."
"The press must remain free to cover both sides, or there will be a free press no more. The freedoms of speech and press would be illusory if the prevailing party could obtain billions of dollars from the press because it provided a forum for the losing side," Fox News' legal team said of the motion, which described the voting technology company's complaint as challenging "the deeply enshrined protections for the free press."
Dominion sued Fox News in March and is seeking $1.6 billion in damages from the company for allegedly perpetuating "a false story of election fraud in order to serve its own commercial purposes."
