France's Prime Minister Edouard Philippe (pictured) announced on Tuesday that the country's government decided to suspend the increase in fossil fuel taxes in response to protests across the country.
Philippe added the measures, which were due to come into force on January 1, 2019, will be postponed for at least six months. According to the prime minister, the French parliament will debate on the issue of taxes from mid-December until March 1, 2019.
The government's decision to halt the rise in fuel taxes came after the so-called yellow vests protests resulted in over 400 people being arrested and more than 130 injured over the weekend. France's President Emmanuel Macron planned to raise the taxes on diesel and petrol in an effort to make more people use non-fossil fuels.
