Canada's Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland and United States Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer will meet in Washington tomorrow to discuss the two countries' trade relations, local media reported on Tuesday.
The Canadian Globe and Mail reported that although there has been some activity related to steel and aluminum for the first time in a long time, a deal was still far from being completed. The two sides are also expected to discuss whether Canadian concerns were being addressed in trade talks between the US and China. The meeting follows a conversation between Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and US Vice President Mike Pence earlier in the day during which they spoke about President Donald Trump's steel and aluminum tariffs, ratification of the North American Free Trade Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and Canadian citizens detained in China.
The news comes after Senator Chuck Grassley previously said that officials from the US and Canada could hold talks soon to resolve the issue of steel tariffs. His remarks in turn came after Trump praised steel tariffs earlier in the day, insisting that they have a positive effect on the US economy.
