The French Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose from 2.2% in April to 2.3% in May, the French National Statistics Institute (INSEE) announced Friday in its final report. The figure was also higher than the 2.2% expected by analysts.
The increase was mainly due to a 5.7% rise in energy prices, up from 3.8% in the previous month. This increase was due to higher prices of petroleum products. On the other hand, food prices increased by 1.3%, slightly higher than in the previous month (1.2%).
The CPI remained unchanged on a monthly basis, compared to the 0.5% increase recorded in April. The Harmonized Index of Consumer Prices (HICP) slowed during the month, rising 0.1% compared to 0.6% in April. On an annual basis, the HICP increased by 2.6% in May 2024, up from 2.4% in April.
