German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas slammed on Thursday Washington's attempts to impose sanctions on the Nord Stream 2 natural gas pipeline project.
"European energy policy is decided in Europe, not the United States. We reject any outside interventions and extraterritorial sanctions," he stated said in a statement.
Lawmakers in the US have been readying sanctions on companies involved in the mostly-Russian pipeline project, aiming to prevent its completion over concerns it will increase Russian influence in the region.
