House Republicans nominated House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (pictured) to succeed Kevin McCarthy as speaker, US media reported citing sources familiar with the matter.
According to the sources, Jordan beat Representative Austin Scott with a 124-81 vote in a GOP conference meeting, but it is still unclear if he will be able to get the support of 127 representatives needed to secure the position in a floor vote.
Earlier in the week, the Republicans voted to nominate House Majority Leader Steve Scalise for the role, but he withdrew from the race after determining he could not get sufficient support.
