GOP unveils stopgap bill to fund govt until Sep. 30

United States House Speaker Mike Johnson unveiled a stopgap bill proposal on Saturday, preventing a government shutdown and extending funding until September 30. The bill envisages a moderate boost to defense spending and reducing funding for non-defense programs.

The bill, which House Republicans said was closely coordinated with the White House, did not propose to make radical changes to current funding levels, with a moderate increase to defense spending. At the same time, an additional $6 billion would be allocated for healthcare and veterans. In total, $892 billion would be provided for discretionary federal defense spending with $708 billion for non-defense discretionary spending.

US President Donald Trump previously said he was in favor of passing "one big beautiful bill" and later stated the White House was working "very hard" with Congress to ensure government funding over the next six months.
