United States Vice President and Democratic nominee in the 2024 presidential election Kamala Harris wrote on her X social media profile that US steel "should remain American-owned and American-operated," adding "it is vital" for the country's steel industry.
"I will always have the back of America's steelworkers," Harris stated, mirroring the earlier statements from the White House opposing the sale of the steel giant to Japanese company Nippon Steel which was planned for the second half of this year.
The agreement was reached in December of 2023 but garnered significant controversy in the US with both the Republican and Democrat party officials opposing the sale of what President Joe Biden referred to as "an iconic American company."
