Former Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak (pictured) has won the first round of the Conservative Party leadership race, while Nadhim Zahawi and Jeremy Hunt have been eliminated, 1922 Committee Chairman Graham Brady announced Wednesday.
Rishi Sunak won 88 votes, followed by Penny Mordaunt with 67, Liz Truss with 50, Tom Tugendhat with 37, Nadhim Zahawi with 25, and Jeremy Hunt with 18.
According to the rules agreed upon for this vote, the last two candidates are eliminated, and the rest go to the second ballot, which will take place tomorrow.
