Israel and Lebanon are supposedly nearing a ceasefire agreement that would bring an end to the Israel-Hezbollah conflict, Axios reported, citing two Israeli officials and two US officials.
The draft ceasefire agreement proposes a 60-day transition period that Israel would use to withdraw from southern Lebanon, while the Lebanese army would take positions in areas close to the border. The deal would have Hezbollah move its heavy weapons north of the Litani River while a US-led oversight committee would watch over implementation and address violations. The US agreed to issue a letter of assurances to Israel as support for Israeli military action against "imminent threats" from Lebanese territory and support for disrupting the re-establishment of a Hezbollah presence near the border or the smuggling of heavy weapons.
However, Israel would only undertake such actions after first consulting with the US and if the Lebanese army hadn't dealt with the threat. Two US officials said the parties were nearing a deal, but that it was not completed.
