A Turkish court ordered that Istanbul mayor Ekrem Imamoglu be jailed pending the outcome of a trial on corruption charges amid the mass protests in the country caused by the mayor's detention, CNN Turk reported.
According to the Turkish state news agency Anadolu, Imamoglu and almost 20 others suspected of corruption were jailed. This order for arrest was reportedly not related to the investigation over the Istanbul mayor aiding the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) and Kurdistan Communities Union (KCK), both of which are considered terrorist organizations by Turkey.
The detention of Imamoglu, a rival of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, on Wednesday caused large protests in the country's capital Ankara, as well as Adana and Izmir, while the Turkish lira tumbled to its all-time lows against the United States dollar and the euro.
