Judge Brett Kavanaugh was sworn in as the 114th United States Supreme Court justice in a private ceremony, hours after he was confirmed by the US Senate.

Chief Justice John Roberts administered the Constitutional Oath while the retired Associate Justice Anthony Kennedy, whom Kavanaugh is replacing, administered the judicial oath in a private ceremony at the Supreme Court, so Kavanaugh can participate in the work of the court immediately, the Court said in a statement.

A formal ceremony will take place at a special sitting of the court at a later date.
