United States House Speaker Kevin McCarthy said on Wednesday that he had a productive meeting with Taiwan's President Tsai Ing-wen today, stressing Washington should continue selling arms to Taiwan.
McCarthy welcomed Tsai earlier today to the US west coast, becoming the highest-ranking official to meet with Taiwan's leader in the US since 1979. Following the bilateral discussions, McCarthy stressed the US and Taiwan must continue strengthening their economic cooperation.
America will maintain support for Taiwan firmly and on a bipartisan basis, the Republican speaker added. China previously objected to the meeting, saying it violates the One-China principle, which sees Beijing as Taiwan's only legitimate government.
