United States House Speaker Kevin McCarthy said on Thursday that he "sees the path that we can come to an agreement" on the federal debt limit. He said the GOP and the Biden administration "still have work to do" but that a House vote on a deal could be scheduled for next week, as the US risks defaulting on its debt as early as June 1.
McCarthy told reporters the two sides are meeting "two or three times a day" and that they are currently negotiating the scope of spending cuts and the lifting of the debt ceiling. "I just believe where we were a week ago and where we are today is a much better place, because we’ve got the right people in the room discussing it in a very professional manner," he added.
