Several regions of New Zealand declared a state of emergency as Cyclone Gabrielle lashed the nation's north, Prime Minister Chris Hipkins announced on Monday, noting that the country does not yet require a nationwide emergency declaration.
Five northern regions, including Auckland, have already been warned of tidal flooding and power outages. "Extreme weather event has come on the back of extreme weather event," said Hipkins.
In the government's update on Monday, it was also announced that Wellington will allocate $11.5 million to people responding to the massive storm.
