Meta Platforms Inc. announced on Friday that its open source AI model, Llama, will be aboard the International Space Station (ISS) National Laboratory.
In collaboration with Booz Allen Hamilton, Meta deployed a fine-tuned version of Llama 3.2 to help astronauts with low-orbit scientific research. Lower costs and adaptability, using numerical values in decision-making, are just some of the helpful components in a setting like ISS National Laboratory, where researchers can react quickly to new conditions and conduct more budget-friendly projects.
The company said its collaboration with Booz Allen represents how open source AI is "sharpening the United States' competitive edge" and hopes those models will be essential in space exploration, "working hand in hand" with astronauts.
