Peruvian President Pedro Castillo (pictured) dissolved congress and declared a "state of emergency" on Wednesday.
Castillo, who was facing impeachment in congress, established an "emergency government," announced the reorganization of the Public Ministry, National Justice Board, Judicial Power and Constitutional Tribunal and imposed a curfew. Following the announcement, protests erupted in the country's capital Lima.
The Peruvian congress was scheduled to discuss the impeachment of Castillo today and the president was set to address lawmakers and respond to allegations of corruption and "moral incapacity." Reflecting on the accusations against him, Castillo has accused his opponents of attempts to "blow up democracy and disregard our people’s right to choose."
