Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi threatened the United States with revenge for the killing of Quds Force head Qassem Soleimani unless former President Donald Trump and ex-Secretary of State Mike Pompeo are put on trial.
In late 2019, Trump ordered the airstrike which killed Soleimani. The Pentagon defended the move as "defensive," accusing Soleimani of "actively developing plans to attack American diplomats."
Current US President Joe Biden said at the time that Trump's decision to kill Soleimani amounted to "tossing a stick of dynamite into a tinderbox."
