Iranian President Hassan Rouhani thanked Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif on Tuesday after the latter announced his resignation yesterday, Arab News reported. The Iranian leader thanked Zarif for "his ability to stand in the face of pressure and confrontation." However, it has yet not been confirmed that Rouhani accepted the minister's resignation.
Iranian media reported earlier that Zarif decided to resign due to the disagreements with the presidential office, citing sources close to the matter.
After announcing that he is leaving his post, Zarif urged for unity in Iran's foreign policy, stressing that his decision to quit as the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Iran was "a nudge" to return it "to its rightful place." Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu took to Twitter to comment on Zarif's resignation, stating: "Good riddance. As long as I'm here, Iran won't have a nuclear weapon."
