United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio will travel to the Middle East in mid-February, marking his first trip to the region after assuming office in January, Axios reported Thursday, citing sources familiar with the matter.
Rubio reportedly plans to travel to the region after attending the Munich Security Conference on February 14. His tour is expected to include visits to Israel, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.
It would also be the first time a high-ranking official from the administration of President Donald Trump visited the Middle East at a time when Trump is facing criticism over his statement calling for the US to take ownership of Gaza. Rubio backed the proposal, stating that it meant his country was ready to assume responsibility for the war-torn enclave's reconstruction.
