Rubio: US hopes Russia agrees to ceasefire

EPA-EFE/UKRAINE PRESIDENTIAL PRESS SERVICE HANDOUT

United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio told journalists after a meeting in Jeddah on Tuesday that he hopes Russia would agree to a ceasefire, after Ukraine showed readiness for it as well.

"Ukraine is ready to stop shooting and start talking. Now it will be up to them [Russians] to say yes or no. I hope they're gonna say yes, and if they do, then I think we made great progress. If they say no, then we will unfortunately know what the impediment is to peace," he remarked. US National Security Adviser Mike Waltz added that it is "very clear" Kiev shares US President Donald Trump's peace vision.

Rubio insisted that the only way to end the war is through negotiations. However, he added that it is much easier to do so when "people aren't shooting at each other." While there is no deadline for Russia to respond, Washington hopes to get an answer "as soon as possible," Rubio explained.
