Russia's Foreign Ministry said on Thursday it is not surprised by United States Congress' plans to impose sanctions on the country's Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project and noted such measures would hurt Europeans.
"This is not come as a surprise for us," Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko (pictured) stated. "Their goal [of the sanctions] is absolutely obvious: obtaining unilateral advantages in the gas sector by violating the interests of Europeans," he added.
On Wednesday, the US House of Representatives approved a draft military budget for 2020 which includes Nord Stream 2 sanctions. German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas slammed the US for preparing the measures, claiming the European energy policy should be "decided in Europe."
