Russian soldier Vadim Shishimarin (pictured) pleaded guilty on Wednesday to murdering an unarmed civilian in the first trial that is taking place in Ukraine over Moscow's actions during its military operation in that country, which Kiev interprets as war crimes.

The 21-year-old Shishimarin has been accused of following another soldier's order and killing an unarmed Ukrainian civilian in the village of Chupakhivka on February 28. If proven guilty, he could be sentenced to life in prison. The trial is taking place at the Solomyansky District Court in Kiev.

The United States and the United Nations (UN) Human Rights Council (UNHRC) are also among those that announced the creation of programs that will investigate potential war crimes Russia might have committed in Ukraine.
