Senate advances vote on raising debt limit

The United States Senate on Thursday advanced the vote on a bill that would raise the federal debt ceiling.

Sixty or more senators had to support limiting the debate on the bill in order for it to proceed to the next stage where it could get officially passed with votes from only a simple majority that the Democrats have in the lower chamber.

The procedural move got 64 votes, including 14 from Republicans, who therefore enabled Democrats to pass the bill later without any GOP support.
