A group of soldiers in Niger claimed that they overthrew President Mohamed Bazoum after he was apprehended by presidential guards earlier, AFP reported on Thursday. Colonel-Major Amadou Abdramane said on national television that the defense and security forces "have decided to put an end" to Bazoum's regime.
The soldiers also said that a nationwide curfew has been instituted and that Niger's borders are closed. On Wednesday, United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken expressed "unwavering support" for Bazoum and condemned the "effort to seize power by force and overturn the constitutional order."
