A United States delegation, led by Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs Barbara Leaf, is set to travel to Damascus in the coming days, Axios reported on Thursday.
Last week, Secretary of State Tony Blinken said that the United States has been in direct communications with the Sunni Islamist opposition group Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), which led the offensive that resulted in the overthrow of dictator Bashar al-Assad.
Nonetheless, Washington continues to classify HTS as a terrorist organization. During her visit, Leaf is anticipated to meet with Mohammed al-Bashir, who has recently assumed leadership in Syria's transitional govt.
