British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said Friday that Nissan's £2 billion investment in three new electric car models will turn Sunderland into an EV Silicon Valley.
"Nissan's investment is a massive vote of confidence in the UK's automotive industry, which already contributes a massive £71 billion a year to our economy...Making the UK the best place to do business is at the heart of our economic plan," Sunak said.
Earlier, Nissan announced that the total investment in the Sunderland area, including the battery plants, will reach £3 billion. The carmaker will invest £1.1 billion in the last phase, with the remaining £2 billion expected to come from the battery supplier, the Chinese group Envision, once confirmed.
