Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson announced on Monday the country has made an official decision to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
"The best thing for the security of Sweden and the Swedish people is that we join NATO," said Andersson during a press conference. The prime minister previously explained Sweden hopes to coordinate the application process as much as possible with Finland.
The decision comes the day after Andersson's Social Democratic Party (SAP) expressed it would support the country's accession to the alliance. Earlier, Finnish President Sauli Niinisto announced Helsinki will apply to join the organization, noting the Ukrainian crisis "had altered the security environment of Finland."
