Taiwan condemned the two-day military exercise launched by China around the island on Thursday, calling the drills "irrational provocations," AFP reported.

Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense stated that it "strongly condemned such irrational provocations and actions that undermine regional peace and stability," adding that it "dispatched" sea, air and ground forces in response to the unannounced drills.

China began the drills just three days after Lai Ching-te was sworn in as the Taiwanese leader.
