Robert Lighthizer, former US Trade Representative under Donald Trump's first administration, has been asked to return to the role as the president-elect assembles his cabinet, according to the Financial Times on Friday, which cited several sources familiar with the discussions.
Lighthizer, known for his protectionist policies, previously oversaw Trump’s "trade war" with China, including high tariffs and import restrictions. While he had allegedly expressed interest in roles such as Commerce or Treasury Secretary, Trump is expected to offer the Commerce post to Linda McMahon and Treasury to a financier with names like Scott Bessent and John Paulson being on the list.
Lighthizer's reappointment could represent a concern for US trade partners, especially China, given his opposition to free trade and criticism of the World Trade Organization. The media indicated it remains unclear whether he will accept the position.
