TikTok files lawsuit against US gov't over possible ban

EPA-EFE/ALLISON DINNER

TikTok and its parent company ByteDance Ltd. officially filed a lawsuit on Tuesday against the United States government over the bill that could potentially ban the social media platform from operating in the country, citing violations of the First Amendment.

"For the first time in history, Congress has enacted a law that subjects a single, named speech platform to a permanent, nationwide ban and bars every American from participating in a unique online community with more than 1 billion people worldwide," TikTok said in a filing.

TikTok insisted that the argument that the country is concerned for its national security is insufficient to restrict the right to free speech.
