Tariffs on $200 billion worth of Chinese imports will not be raised from 10% to 25% on January 1, the White House confirmed in a statement. United States President Donald Trump met his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping in Argentina earlier, and the two held talks which lasted some two and a half hours.
"President Trump has agreed that on January 1, 2019, he will leave the tariffs on $200 billion worth of product at the 10% rate, and not raise it to 25% at this time," the statement read. Beijing has also agreed to label the opioid fentanyl a controlled substance. Chinese Vice Minister of Commerce Wang Shouwen added the two countries will also "step up negotiations toward the elimination of all additional tariffs," according to state media.
