United States President Donald Trump talked over the phone on Wednesday with South Korea’s newly elected President Moon Jae-in and the two agreed to work together in order to prevent further nuclear and missile tests from North Korea, South Korea’s presidency Blue House said in a statement.
Trump congratulated Moon on his victory during the half-hour long conversation and invited Moon to visit him in the US soon. According to the Blue House, Trump called Seoul “not just good ally but great ally” and stressed the importance of the cooperation between South Korea and the US amid latest tensions on the Korean Peninsula. The US president noted it won't be easy to solve the North Korean nuclear issue, but insisted it is possible.
Moon was sworn in as president earlier today after winning the presidential election on Tuesday. The election was held as a result of the impeachment of former President Park Geun-hye following allegations she was involved in a corruption scandal. Meanwhile, North Korea said it intends to continue conducting nuclear tests.
