NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg announced on Monday that Turkey had agreed to advance with Sweden's candidacy for NATO membership.
During a press conference, Stoltenberg confirmed that Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had already agreed to submit Sweden's accession protocol to the Grand National Assembly as soon as possible and to ensure its ratification. He also described it as a "historic step" that makes "all NATO allies stronger and more secure."
The decision follows months of discussions and came hours before the NATO summit in Vilnius, Lithuania.
