US allegedly detected Iranian plot to kill Trump

EPA-EFE/ALLISON DINNER

United States intelligence agencies detected "in recent weeks" an alleged Iranian plot to try to assassinate former United States President Donald Trump, CNN reported on Tuesday, citing multiple sources.

The outlet added that the Secret Service ramped up security measures around the Republican nominee in response to intelligence findings and that there was no evidence linking Thomas Matthew Crooks, the individual who attempted on Trump's life, to the alleged plot. It remains "not clear" if the threat was shared with the Trump campaign.

Former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo was also a target of the Iranian assassination conspiracy, the sources added.
