Senate advances govt funding plan to avert shutdown

Policymakers in the United States Senate have advanced a stand-alone continuing resolution aimed at averting a partial government shutdown.

The Senate will hold a final vote on the legislation sometime before the funding expires on Friday in order to keep the government funded through December 16.

The upper chamber broke filibuster on Tuesday, approving the measure by a 72-23 margin.
