United States Vice President JD Vance announced on Tuesday that he will travel to Greenland on Friday to visit some of his country's troops stationed on the island's northwest coast and "also just check what's going on with security there."

"A lot of other countries have threatened Greenland, have threatened to use its territories and its water ways to threaten the United States, to threaten Canada, and of course, to threaten the people of Greenland," Vance said in a video he posted on X. "... [W]e wanna reeinvigorate the security of the people of Greenland and because we think it's important to protecting the security of the entire world."

Since he returned to the White House, US President Donald Trump has touted the idea of the US annexing Greenland, despite Denmark's opposition. Meanwhile, the administration's new intelligence report noted China and Russia's alleged interest in the island's strategic importance.
