Venezuela's National Electoral Council declared on Monday that the incumbent Nicolas Maduro won the presidential election held over the weekend with 51.2% of the vote.
According to the electoral council, Maduro received 5,150,092 votes whereas his opponent Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia acquired 4,445,978 or 44.2%. Other candidates won 462,704, or 4.6% of the vote. The council reported a turnout of 59% with 80% of ballots counted.
On the other hand, the leader of the opposition Maria Corina Machado said Gonzalez won the election with 70% of the vote, adding that truth will prevail. Several countries refused to acknowledge the election results, including Argentina and the United States, whereas Russia, China, and Cuba congratulated Maduro on his victory.
