Director of the United States National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) Dr. Anthony Fauci (pictured) said in a statement on Monday that he is set to retire from his position in December as he wishes to pursue "the next step in [his] career." Fauci has served as the Chief Medical Advisor to the President [Joe Biden] since January 2021 and was one of the leading members of the White House Coronavirus Task Force under former President Donald Trump.
"I am very proud of our many accomplishments. I have worked with - and learned from - countless talented and dedicated people in my own laboratory, at NIAID, at NIH, and beyond. To them I express my abiding respect and gratitude," Fauci said.
Dr. Fauci was called a "disaster" by Trump as the latter believed that people "were tired of COVID-19," and was also accused of trying to meddle in politics ad he was allegedly seeking to undermine Trump's reelection efforts. As a doctor with the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Fauci has been working in the public sector for more than half a century and has been employed in an advisory capacity as an advisor to every US president since Ronald Reagan.
