World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus on Friday declared that COVID-19 virus no longer poses a global health emergency, downgrading the status of the coronavirus pandemic three years after its outbreak.
"This virus is here to stay," the WHO chief stressed during the press conference, adding that the coronavirus infection continues to claim lives across the globe. "It is time for countries to transition from emergency mode to managing COVID-19 alongside other infectious diseases," he stated.
"That does not mean COVID-19 is over as a global health threat," WHO director-general said, emphasizing that the organization will reasses its approach should COVID-19 "put our world in peril."
