International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) President Mirjana Spoljaric confirmed and denounced on Thursday the deaths of three ICRC workers when shelling struck the location where a frontline aid distribution was scheduled to take place in the Donetsk region.

"I condemn attacks on Red Cross personnel in the strongest terms. It’s unconscionable that shelling would hit an aid distribution site. Our hearts are broken today as we mourn the loss of our colleagues and care for the injured. This tragedy unleashes a wave of grief all too familiar to those who have lost loved ones in armed conflict," Spoljaric added in a statement.

Earlier, Russian artillery shelling targeted the village of Viroliubivka in the Donetsk region, where the staff members were transporting humanitarian aid in a truck, resulting in the loss of three lives and leaving two others injured.
