Outgoing French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal secured a role as the leader of President Emmanuel Macron's centrist Renaissance party.
Attal faced no opposition and was elected by members on Saturday. His official assumption of this role, however, awaits Macron's acceptance of his resignation, expected just before the upcoming National Assembly session on July 16.
The move comes following a recent electoral setback for Macron's coalition, which placed second in snap elections, failing to secure a majority in the 577-seat assembly.
