United States President Joe Biden in a meeting with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen raised concerns about China's activities around the Ream Naval Base in the country, underscoring the importance of Phnom Penh's "full transparency" regarding the issue, the White House announced on Saturday.
According to a US readout of the meeting, Biden called for the release of activists detained by Cambodia on "politically motivated charges." "President Biden reiterated the United States' commitment to the Cambodian people and their aspirations for a more prosperous, democratic, and independent country," the White House said.
The two officials met during the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit, where they also touched on the crisis in Burma and the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
