United States President Joe Biden selected Courtney O'Donnell, a top aide who has previously worked with Vice President Kamala Harris and her husband Doug Emhoff, to serve as the country's representative at the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), Politico reported on Monday.
O'Donnell, a senior adviser to Harris and acting chief of staff for Emhoff, is the Democratic president's choice to become the US permanent representative to UNESCO. She has expertise in gender equity, countering prejudice against Jews, and was communications director for First Lady Jill Biden during her husband's vice presidency.
After a controversial five-year absence, Washington officially rejoined UNESCO on July 25.
