Boeing Co. factory workers voted to accept the company's latest contract proposal, thus ending their strike that lasted more than seven weeks and crippled production.
Members of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers voted 59% in favor of adopting the new labor deal that includes pay raises of 38% over four years and ratification bonuses. However, the company refused to meet strikers' demand to restore a traditional pension plan that was thrown out nearly a decade ago, according to the Associated Press.
"I congratulate the International Association of Machinists and Boeing for coming to an agreement that reflects the hard work and sacrifices of 33,000 Machinist workers," United States President Joe Biden said, adding that the contract is "also important for Boeing’s future as a critical part of America’s aerospace sector."
