Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian (pictured) said during a press conference on Friday that the Philippines should understand "the true intentions" of the United States and called on Manila to "adhere" to previous agreements.

The spokesperson's remarks come at a time when tensions between China and the Philippines are on the rise, as a result of recent incidents in the disputed waters of the South China Sea. Lin also remarked that the government in Manila should respond to "common concerns of countries in the region" while adding the Philippines should not "sacrifice its own security interests to benefit the US."

Lin said the Philippines must "quickly" withdraw the US middle-range missile system from its territory which was deployed in the country for the first time in April.
