Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning confirmed Thursday the safe return of three Chinese citizens who were "wrongfully detained" in the United States. Mao emphasized that this repatriation was a result of the relentless efforts of the Chinese government, highlighting its unwavering commitment to safeguarding the rights of its citizens.
Mao reiterated China's firm opposition to the US's political suppression of Chinese nationals and reiterated that the government would continue to take necessary measures to defend their legitimate interests. Notably, Mao also pointed out that a fugitive, who had been evading justice in the US for many years, was returned to China as part of the arrangement, underscoring China's determination to pursue criminals wherever they may be.
Hours earlier, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said that US citizens Mark Swidan, Kai Li, and John Leung were on their way to the US " just in time for Thanksgiving."
