Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA) approved a $48.7 million contract with Elon Musk's Boring Company for the construction and running of a "people mover" at the Las Vegas Convention center, media reported.
The "people mover" is an underground highway system of two tunnels for autonomous electric vehicles - Tesla Model 3 and Model X vehicles, modified to hold up to 16 passengers, three stations and a pedestrian tunnel. The tunnels will connect the eastern part of the convention center's South Hall with a new building at the western edge.
The project is expected to be completed for the Consumer Electronics Show in January 2021. Musk said earlier that he expects the tunnel to be operational by the end of 2019. The contract envisages that the test rides begin by November 2020. The 'people mover' could someday connect the Las Vegas Convention Center, downtown, the Las Vegas Boulevard Resort Corridor and McCarran International Airport.
